District Governor, Rotarian Olufemi Adenekan’s Message For September 2024: “Basic Education And Literacy Month”
Basic Education And Literacy Month
Fellow Rotarians,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to September, which Rotary International designates as Basic Education and Literacy Month. This focus area is crucial to our mission as Rotarians. During this month, we are called upon to implement impactful service projects and advocate within our communities to reduce illiteracy, both within our District and beyond.
Over the years, our clubs have executed numerous transformative projects in this focus area. I recall the many adult literacy programmes organised by various clubs, as well as the support provided to educational institutions at all levels, from primary to tertiary, across different communities.
This year, RI President Stephanie Urchick encourages us to adapt our approaches in response to the evolving needs of our communities. In our quest to increase our impact, I urge you to focus on sustainable projects within the realm of basic education and literacy. As technology continues to advance, we must be ready to equip both young and adult learners with the skills and tools necessary for success, whether in schools or adult literacy classes.
I encourage you to continue making Rotary relevant in your communities through innovative support initiatives. One effective approach is for clubs to collaborate on significant projects that empower learners with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in their communities.
At the District level, we are committed to supporting you in achieving your goals in this focus area. I invite you to join us on September 5, 2024, at Bank PHB Hall, Rotary Centre, for a seminar designed to equip you with the essential information and tools needed to enhance education and literacy programs.
As I conclude this message, I want to express my gratitude for the various projects you have undertaken in your communities during the first two months of this Rotary year. I have had the honour of commissioning many of these projects on behalf of your clubs, and I am deeply appreciative of the trust you have placed in me. Let us continue to build on this momentum. Our goal is to create a better world through humanitarian service projects that have a lasting impact on our communities and beyond, driven by the Magic of Rotary.
